The grand Chestnut tree grew hardily in forests of the ‘new land’.

It was a spectacular tree, often growing 100 feet high with a trunk diameter of 4 to 5 feet.

In spring, through the central Appalachian Mountains, their beauty was breathtaking. The mountains were said to be “snowcapped’ with flowers from these trees.

Colonists and Native Americans gathered the abundantly-grown chestnuts for food.

The nut was an important food source for themselves and their livestock. It had a ‘sweet as honey’ taste and was easy to peel.

The wood from the Chestnut tree was also cultivated for building strong homes and furniture, making the Chestnut tree an important part of life so long ago.
